Lycoming County Genealogical Society
About Us Page

One of our ongoing projects is the recording (by digital camera) of every tombstone, in every cemetery in the county - to preserve them for the future - since they are fast becoming unreadable. Members use their own cameras and equipment - but the photos are the property of LCGS. We have completed most of this project with only Muncy and half of Montoursville to be completed. We hope to complete our photography in the summer of 2012. At present the pictures are stored on a 1 Terabyte hard drive - but after they are all sorted, sized and named, they will be available on CD for purchase with the corresponding cemetery data base. In addition, we will store them on thumb drives (and update storage methods as technology changes) so we are effectively "Preserving the past for the Future".

Another of our goals is education. We present programs on the 4th Sat of the following months March, April May, Sept, Oct and November. These programs are free an open to the ppblic. To that effect we have also put on programs in the schools (see March 2010), had the school come to us see Oct 2009, participated in "Newberry Days" Oct 24, 2009, 2010 and 20011, had a stand at the Hughesville Fair July 2010 2011 , had a "Genealogy How to" day - Jan 2009 and a "Genealogy Workshop" Sept 2009. We are planning on having another Genealogy Workshop or Fair in early 2012.

A recently completed project, was the typing of a database of the naturalization records from 1806-1906, which are in our possession. They were also alphabetized, repaired, and inserted into acid free dividers. We are now working on adding the information to the database, from the naturalization books from 1906 to 1956.

Another project started within the past year is the computer cataloging of all of our holdings. This project is important so we know exactly what we have and where it is. It is also important for insurance purposes.

We are also starting a church records project, in the hopes of acquiring the records from all the churches in the county. Many of these records have already been lost, but we are hoping to acquire as many as possible and have them all in one place and indexed.
